Eugene, OR – The No. 10-ranked Oregon women destroyed a very overmatched St. Martin’s team 93-26 in their first exhibition game of the new season. Point guard Te-Hina Paopao led the Ducks with 22 points in 20 minutes of play, connecting on 4-of-5 three-pointers. It was the first women’s basketball game in front of fans in 606 days. An enthusiastic crowd of 7,475 attended. The fans were treated to an appearance from four members of the 2019-20 Pac-12 championship team in Sabrina Ionescu, Satou Sabally, Ruthy Hebard and Minyon Moore. Hebard recently won a WNBA championship with the Chicago Sky.
Oregon scored the first 38 points of the game and led 24-0 after the first quarter and 47-7 at the half. Paopao scored 12 first quarter points and had 20 points at the half. The Ducks outscored the visitors 16-0 on fastbreak points and had a 12-0 advantage in steals. The Ducks extended their lead to 69-14 after three quarters before coasting to the win, utilizing their bench in the final stanza.
Of Oregon’s newcomers, USC junior transfer Endiya Rogers looked the best. Rogers can play both guard spots and will be able to give Paopao a breather during the season. Tonight, she scored 17 points and dished out six assists over 24 minutes of play. Junior college transfer Chanaya Pinto also was impressive. The 6-1 junior is very fluid, scored ten points and pulled down six rebounds over 18 minutes, hitting 1-of-2 three-pointers. Guard Maddie Scherr played well, helping Paopao out running the offense. She finished with eight points, seven assists, four rebounds with zero turnovers. Kylie Watson and Phillipina Kyei led the Ducks in rebounds with seven each.
The Ducks dominated the statistics in a ridiculous fashion. They had a 46-6 edge in points in the paint, 23-0 in fast break points, 18-1 in steals, 21-4 in assists and 31-0 in points off turnovers. The forced 26 turnovers while committing only nine.
Head Coach Kelly Graves indicated that he “thought our starting backcourt was strong tonight” with “all three having really solid games”.
Freshman guard Taylor Bigby and senior Taylor Hosendove, a 6-1 transfer from Georgia State did not play. Oregon next takes the court in their final exhibition against Westmont on November 6th.
