Body and athleticism
Good level of athleticism for a Chinese kid, Liyongwei has good height and length for a backcourt player. Will demonstrate quick hands and feet. Needs to get stronger in order to fight better through contact on both ends of the floor, but his upper body is not developed badly by any means.
Shooting
Confident shooter and 3-level scorer, will use any opportunity to shoot the ball. Displays good shooting mechanics, sets his feet well, always ready. Has very quick release, will be deadly from outside, especially at catch and shoots. Will be reliable from mid range thanks to a nice pull-up jumper.
Position and offense
More of a shooting guard than a point guard. Would be interesting to see what he could provide for a team as a primary ball handler as he demonstrated some flashes of good court vision. Might be a nice option facilitating off P&R sets due to his solid shooting from mid range and the wide repertoire of shots he has in the bag from there.
Defense and rebounding
Engaged and aggressive on defense, has difficulties fighting through screens, but has quick and active hands, feet too. Should be aggressive on-ball defender, getting stronger would help him be more effective there, has good instinct stealing the ball.
Miscellaneous
Competitor. Played at NBA Global Academy, he will be honing his craft next season at Real Salt Lake Academy in Salt Lake City, UT.
Mid-major schools might be interested in having him, as Liyongwei’s ability to provide buckets seems pretty solid. The 2004-born combo guard might need to work more in the gym in the upcoming season and become stronger, although his upper body doesn't look bad. Having his senior year in the States should definitely help accomplish his plans.
