Kennesaw, GA – The Kennesaw State Owls dominated in the second half to top the visiting Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb in an 85-61 victory. It was the first win for first year head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim. This was an all-around team win for the Owls who had four players in double figures.
Gardner-Webb held an early 26-20 lead with 7:30 left in the first half. Kennesaw State would then go on a 12-3 run to close the half and take a 32-29 lead into halftime. In the second half, it was all defense for Kennesaw State. Their pressure zone defense was too much for Gardner-Webb as they were held to 35 percent from the field and only 20 percent from 3-point range. The Owls jumped out to an early second half nine point lead (46-37) and never looked back. The Owls defense and hot shooting were the story of the second half. Kennesaw State shot 68 percent from the field to increase their lead.
Senior point guard, Tyler Hooker had a great all-around game tonight as he led his team with 27 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. Hooker brought his entire offensive game tonight by hitting perimeter shots and putting pressure on the defense with strong drives to the basket. Hooker was also 9-of-10 from the foul line. The Owls also got contributions from senior forward Bryson Lockley with 17 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore forward Ugo Obineke who added 19 points.
Gardner-Webb was led by leading scorer Eric Jamison with 22 points. Jamison showed good versatility playing multiple positions offensively and solid defense against the Owls. Jose Perez and Jaheam Cornwall added 17 and 15 points respectively.
Kennesaw State (1-8) is at Murray State on December 16 while Gardner-Webb (3-7)is back in action on the road against Virginia Tech on December 15.
