Eugene, OR – It’s strange that two games or two days could be so different. After losing a high-scoring game in overtime, Oregon put the defensive clamps on the Beavers in an easy 75-53 win. The 12-point final margin was the closest Oregon State came for the majority of the game. The Ducks held the Beavers to seven first quarter points and to 18 at halftime to the delight of the 7,349 fans. Oregon State didn’t score a field goal for the last six minutes of the first half. In Friday’s nights tussle the Beavers made their first eight three-pointers and were 9-of-11 at the half. Tonight they were 1-of-7 from deep at the half. Oregon was led by their 6-4 freshman from Germany Satou Sabally with 21 points. Sabrina Ionescu added 15 points, six rebounds and 11 assists. Matie Cazorla added 16 points and Mallory McGuire had 14 points and six rebounds before fouling out. Kat Tudor led the Beavers with 17 points while 6-5 Marie Gulich added 16 points and ten rebounds.
Sabally got the Ducks going in the first half with three three-pointers and 13 first half points. The 6-5 McGuire, starting in place of shooting guard Lexi Bando, who remains sidelined with a leg injury, added eight first half points on four 15-foot shots from the circle. Ionescu added nine points and five assists to help the Ducks to a 40-18 halftime lead.
The Beavers started to get their offense together in the third quarter, scoring 22 points, four more than they had in the entire first half. That closed Oregon’s lead to 16 points, 56-40 at the close of the quarter. Oregon State’s Tudor, who hit five first-half three-pointers Friday night and her first six attempts, hit her first three early in the fourth quarter. Aleah Goodman followed with another three which cut the Ducks’ lead to 58-46. That was as close as the Beavers would get in that run as a three-pointer from Maite Cazorla put Oregon up by 19 (71-52) with 5:20 remaining. From there Oregon coasted to the 12-point win.
Oregon dominated the boards with a +11 advantage with Ruthy Hebard grabbing ten. Hebard had an off-game offensively shooting 2-of-15 and scoring only seven points.
Both teams head to the road next week with each facing Colorado and Utah..
