Despite a sluggish start to the first three quarters, the NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars battled throughout the game as they won back to back games by one point, this time over Australia 68-67. The USA struggled to finish several layups and short jumpers around the basket throughout the first three quarters. The USA was behind by nine points to start the 4th quarter, although it could have been worse, as the team was down by 18 points with 3:30 left to go in the 3rd quarter.
After a timeout, the USA team again switched defenses and thanks to Meagan Fulps (Santa Clara), Lauren Oosdyke (Northern Colorado), and Jamie Russell (Illinois State), began to really exert some pressure on the Aussies forcing several turnovers and generating transition buckets. The Aussies maintained their lead well into the fourth, but the Americans slowly chipped away at the lead and took the lead on a late three-pointer by Stephanie Sension (Green Bay). The Aussies answered to go up one, but again the USA responded with a three-pointer by Jacqui Kalin (Northern Iowa) to re-take the lead.
After getting another stop the Australian team was forced to foul, sending Russell to the line. She hit one of the two free throws putting the USA up by three. Australia was able to make a harmless 2 point shot at the buzzer which settled the final margin. The USA will look to take their fourth quarter energy into their final game in Nan’an tomorrow night vs Brazil.
NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars Head Coach Coach Denker:
“Unfortunately we dug a hole for ourselves throughout the first half and early 3rd quarter. Certainly some credit for that deficit has to go to the Australians but somehow we managed to cut it to single digits at half and then despite another negative run we closed the 3rd quarter strong. This team plays together and they really stuck by one another through some serious adversity…we had missed so many layups that it had to take a toll on us mentally but we just kept playing and finally something clicked.”
I thought Adrian (Ritchie, Green Bay) did a great job for us at the point, once we made that change our offense picked up. The other part of that change was moving Jac (Jacqui Kalin, Northern Iowa) to the shooting guard spot and she started scoring. Then our posts got more active and Sam Ostarello (Purdue) went to work inside grabbing offensive boards and scoring in the lane.”
“Look, we shot 35% to their 55% but won the game because we forced 19 turnovers (to our six) and got 16 O-Boards…heart and hustle.”
“This was a lot of fun to be able to bounce back and get this win and everyone chipped in to make it happen.”
