Foshan (Guangdong), China – The NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars ran out to a 13-point lead at the end of the first quarter and held on for a 70-57 victory over New Zealand in the first game of the China tour.
The USA All-Stars ended the first quarter with an 18-5 lead as a result of aggressive defensive play and transition buckets. However, New Zealand would not give up. The gritty Kiwis hung in close with some hot outside shooting, coupled with a cold shooting spurt by the USA, eventually trimming the lead to four points late in the third quarter.
That’s when Tear’a Laudermill took over the game. The Nebraska Cornhusker would go on to hit three 3-pointers, collect several steals and layups to help Team USA pull away in the final stanza. Tear’a would finish with 22 points and four steals. Morgan Bailey was also a presence down low and contributed eight points and seven rebounds. Four other Americans would finish with at least six points to round out the balanced USA attack. Team USA out-rebounded New Zealand 42-25 and forced the Kiwis into 16 turnovers.
The USA All-Stars shot 46 percent on 2-point FG attempts but only were 4-of-19 on three-pointers. The Kiwis had trouble from long-distance as well connecting on only 5-of-26 attempts. Charlotte Whittaker led New Zealand with 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting.
China had no problem with Poland in an easy 72-49 win. They led 39-20 at the half. Next up for the USA All-Stars will be a match against Poland tonight.
