The NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars broke out of their scoring slump in easily besting Brazil 85-47 before a sellout crowd of over 3,500. It was the best game of the trip for the Americans, particularly from the offensive end of the floor. The USA is now 4-1 in the “Four Nations” tournament.
The USA came out strong and had their offensive game flowing from the start of the contest. The USA had four players in double figures led by Lauren Oosdyke (No. Colorado) with 14, Sam Heck (Evansville) and Kate Thompson (Michigan) had 12 apiece, and Sam Ostarello (Purdue) chipped in 10. Scoring balance was key as three others had over eight points. The American side shot 50% from the floor and assisted on 18 baskets led by Jamie Russell’s (Illinois St.) seven assists.
Once again the Americans played solid team defense thanks to the early game efforts of Stephanie Sension (Green Bay), Meghan Fulps (Santa Clara) and Russell. Morgan Johnson (Iowa) had a strong stretch in the first quarter with an offensive rebound, a basket, and a blocked shot that helped the Americans to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter. They continued their hot shooting to take a 13 point lead to the break.
Kate Thompson (Michigan) hit four three-point FG’s for the Americans who came out firing in the 3rd quarter, scoring 27 points and breaking the game open.
The US held Brazil to 28% shooting and out-rebounded them 39-30. The Brazilians were led in scoring by Maria De Oliveira with 10 points.
The Americans will play China tomorrow night in the final game of this, the second stop. The Australians will play Brazil tomorrow.
Chris Denker, NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars Head Coach
“This was obviously our best offensive game of the tour. I’m really happy for the players, they have been struggling and it sure is nice to see the ball go in the basket.” “We played good defense and rebounded pretty well which allowed us to get into transition and score some easy baskets. I thought our energy at both ends was as good as it’s been so far.”
“Everybody chipped in and gave us positive minutes, this was a team effort.” “Big game with China tomorrow night!”
