NetScouts Basketball USA All-Star Team member Chelsea Poppens signed a contract with the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars yesterday.
Poppens participated in NetScouts Basketball’s most recent tour of China in which the team went undefeated with three wins each over China, Australia and Hungary to go 9-0. She averaged 7.2 points and 5.9 rebounds on the tour. She was named to the All-Tournament Team in Changshu, the last of three stops, where the 6’2 forward had a double-double in the overtime win against China with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Chelsea averaged eight points and eight rebounds in the three games in Changshu.
Poppens finished her career at Iowa State as the second player in Cyclone history to score over 1,000 points and grab over 1,000 rebounds. She was named to the all-Big 12 first team in 2012 and 2013 and was a two-time honorable mention All-America. She averaged 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in her four years at Iowa State.
“We’re very happy for Pop,” NetScouts Basketball USA All-Star head coach Chris Denker said.
“It’s a great achievement to get to the pinnacle of women’s basketball in the USA and the NetScouts Basketball family wishes her the best of luck”.
Poppens is the second member of her NetScouts Basketball team to get to the WNBA. Alexis Gray-Lawson played two seasons for the Phoenix Mercury after her career at California.
Actually, last year Bri Gilbreath (USC) signed with the Phoenix Mercury after our tour that preceded the London Olympic Games. So Poppy makes 3!
