Detroit, MI – Led by senior guard NBA draft prospect Keifer Sykes’ 28 points, the Phoenix of Green Bay moved to a 15-4 overall and a 4-1 in the Horizon League with a comeback 70-64 road win over Detroit.
The 6-0, 180-pound Chicago native struggled some in the first half- still while accumulating ten points but on 4-of-8 from the floor and three TO’s as Green Bay fell behind by as many as 10 (26-16).
The mercurial guard went to work in the second half on 7-of-11 from the floor-including two huge triples as Green Bay took the lead for good at the 15:33 mark, 38-37. But it was his bucket at the 13:29 mark that defined exactly why Sykes is generally regarded as a strong 2015 NBA Draft candidate. After an outlet from a teammate, Sykes found a bit of space at half-court and within a split second, he was at the rim, laying the ball in. His acceleration with the ball was second to none. Sykes also demonstrated his immense athletic ability with an eye opening dunk after a deflection and then an old school one handed palming bank after a back door burst.
Sykes finished with 28 points on 11-of-19, 2-of-6 3-point FG and 4-of-5 from the FT line. As usual, he was ably supported by 6-9 senior forward Greg Mays with 15 and 11 plus three blocks and two steals and junior guard Carrington Love with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Detroit was again led by senior forward Juwan Howard Jr with 19 points as the Titans fell to 9-10 and 3-2.
