Matej Kavas of Seattle University continues to shine this year following up his stellar freshmen season when he was named the WAC Freshmen of the Year. He has been named NetScouts Basketball’s International Player of the Week for games through December 3rd. The 6-8 sophomore from Slovenia averaged 20 points and seven rebounds per game on 56 percent shooting while leading the team to three straight wins over Idaho State (73-67), Kennesaw State (66-54) and Eastern Washington (84-65). He scored in double figures for all three games starting with a 24- point, nine rebound effort against Idaho State. He followed that up with 10 points and four rebounds in the win vs. Kennesaw State. He finished his week with a 26 point, eight rebound outburst against cross state rival Eastern Washington in which he hit 4-of-5 three point attempts. Kavas has more than doubled his scoring (8.6 to 18.3) and rebounding (2.9 to 6.3) averages this season.
Maria Jespersen of the University of Southern Florida was named NetScouts Basketball International Women’s Player of the Week for games through December 3rd. The 6-foot Danish forward started the week with a season-high 25 points, including shooting 4-of-4 from beyond the arc to propel her team to a 68-59 victory. She followed that up against George Washington in an 83-78 win, by scoring 25 points again, shooting an excellent 11-of-15 (73%). She also added a season high 13 rebounds on the night, giving her four double-doubles this season. The senior forward is off to a great start this season, averaging a double-double, 17.4 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3.
