A.J. English exploded for 46 points in a win against Fairfield before leading his Iona squad past Marist for back-to-back victories. The Wilmington, Delaware native has been named NetScouts Basketball’s National Player of the Week for games from November 30th to December 6th.
The 6-foot-4 senior guard began the week with an efficient 46-point performance in which he shot 15-of-25 from the field and 13-of-19 from the three-point line. He added eight assists and three rebounds as Iona posted 101 points. English followed with 16 points, nine assists, six rebounds, three blocks, and three steals in a 101-66 win against Marist. On the week, English averaged 31.0 points, 8.5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 60.6% (20-of-33) from the floor and 65.2% (15-of-23) from deep.
English, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, was the only returning player in college basketball who averaged at least 20 points, five assists, and five rebounds per game last season. As a talented scorer that’s also averaging seven assists per game this season, English has asserted himself into the NBA Draft discussion.
Louisiana Monroe’s Majok Deng was another senior who played well in a pair of victories this week. The Adelaide, South Australia native has been named NetScouts Basketball’s International Player of the Week for games from November 30th to December 6th.
The 6-foot-10 forward started the week with 22 points in a 64-54 win over Chattanooga. He topped that total against Louisiana-Lafayette, the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference, posting 30 points and eight rebounds in an 81-70 victory. Deng averaged 26.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game on the week while shooting 51.6% (16-of-31) from the floor.
Deng has been the leading scorer and rebounder for the 4-2 Warhawks thus far, averaging 18.3 points and 7.3 boards per game. Louisiana Monroe will need his consistent production if it hopes to win the Sun Belt.
