Brice Johnson had two efficient performances as North Carolina defeated Tulsa and UCLA. The Orangeburg, South Carolina native has been named NetScouts Basketball’s National Player of the Week for games from December 14th to December 20th.
The senior forward started the week with a double-double against Tulane, as Johnson dropped 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while shooting 11-of-17 from the field. He followed with 27 points and nine rebounds on a near-perfect 11-of-12 shooting as the Tar Heels defeated a ranked UCLA opponent. On the week, Johnson averaged 26.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while shooting 75.9% (22-29) from the field and 72.7% (8-11) from the free throw line.
North Carolina is now 9-2 this season and has shown glimpses as the most talented team in the country. If Johnson can continue to produce at this level, the Tar Heels will continue to rise in the polls while Johnson could hear his name called in the upcoming NBA Draft.
Across the country, Domantas Sabonis had a pair of double-doubles as Gonzaga beat St. Martin’s and Tennessee. The Kaunas, Lithuania native has been named NetScouts Basketball’s International Player of the Week for games from December 14th to December 20th.
Sabonis dominated inside as he averaged 28.5 points and 14.0 rebounds per game while shooting 75.9% (22-29) from the floor. He tallied 21 points and 12 rebounds against St. Martin’s as the Bulldogs cruised to an 86-50 victory. The 6-foot-11 sophomore then scored 36 points, shooting 12-of-16 from the field and 12-of-15 from the free throw line, and corralled 16 boards as Gonzaga defeated Tennessee.
While Sabonis could have declared for the NBA Draft following his freshman year, he returned to Gonzaga and has shown his potential as a first round pick. He’s averaging 17.3 points and 10.8 rebounds this year and Gonzaga will be the favorite to once again win the West Coast Conference.
