The Kentucky Wildcats season was a disappointing one to say the least. Coming off a stellar National Championship run their entire starting five made it into the NBA. Kentucky then had another great recruiting class with highly touted center Nerlens Noel and four star prospect Archie Goodwin. The 2012-13 season turned out badly as they finished with a 12-6 record in conference play and 21-12 overall. To make matters worse they lost Noel to a knee injury, did not qualify for the NCAA tournament and then lost to Robert Morris in the NIT.

Goodwin, a 6’4 190 lb. shooting guard is an interesting prospect to keep an eye on from both a positive and negative standpoint. The physical tools are there, having a 6’9.5″ wingspan which is outstanding for a guard his size. His athleticism is explosive as well as his quickness in transition. Offensively, he averaged 14.1 PPG which came off of transitional offense and easy dunks and lay-ups. Shooting the ball has been a real struggle for Goodwin for he shot a decent 44% from the field on the season but according to Synergy, he was only shooting 33% of all attempted jump shots and 27% from three-point. His decision making is poor and has questionable consistency.

On the defensive end is where Goodwin will have to find his niche, he will need bulk up and add some more strength and also learn to use his massive wingspan and quickness to his advantage as it should translate well going forward.

Goodwin is a one and done prospect declaring for the 2013 NBA Draft. He decided to leave Kentucky because he likely felt his playing time might be reduced by the incoming recruiting class which is being touted as the best all-time. Top recruits Aaron Harrison and James Young figured to eat into some of his time on the court.

Goodwin should be considered a risky draft prospect because even with the potential he has shown, too much inconsistency and poor shooting along with character and maturity issues will hinder him from developing into an efficient immediate contributor to an NBA team. He’s the youngest domestic player in the 1st round mix. Teams will be looking a him based on his potential down the road.

Draft projections for Goodwin is being a late first-rounder around the 16-20 picks to possibly dropping in to the second-round. Teams like the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls could take a chance on Goodwin mainly for his defensive capabilities and can develop his offensive game down the road.

Trey Burke

The Michigan Wolverines had a tremendous season, making it all the way to the National Championship game but ultimately falling to Louisville in a tight finish. Michigan was led by a handful of outstanding players including Tim Hardaway Jr., Mitch McGary, Glenn Robinson III, and consensus national player of the year Trey Burke. All of whom will eventually play in the NBA.

Burke, a 6’0, 185 pound point guard with tremendous skill and very high potential is one of those point guards every NBA team wished they had. His ball-handling mixed with his play-making abilities and the uncanny confidence when shooting the ball is what has made Burke the national player of the year. He averaged 18.6 PPG while shooting 46%, 38% from three-point and 6.6 APG with two turnovers per game. This kid does it all, arguably the best pick and roll point guard in college, he can beat defenders every way possible and his innate sense of maturity and leadership was shown by leading his team to the National Championship game. If Burke can fix the few turnover problems he does have, he has the potential to be a great point guard in the NBA.

On the defensive end is another story though, it has been like night and day for Burke between his offensive game and his defensive game. The good side of it is Burke’s wing span which at 6’5.5 helps him grab loose balls and intercept the passing lanes. The bad side is his ability to handle bigger and more physical guards and even quicker guards which gets him into foul trouble as seen in the championship game. If Burke puts in the work, he will get better defensively limiting any holes left in his game.

Burke declared for the 2013 NBA Draft after his sophomore season. He had intially declared for the 2012 NBA Draft in a weak point guard class but ultimately decided to stay in school for one more year. Burke is the best point guard available and is projected as a top 10 or higher picker. The team most in need for Burke are the New Orleans Pelicans. If selected they could pair him with another former national player of the year and starting PF Anthony Davis. Burke would fill a much needed void for the Pelicans as they are trying to re-brand and rebuild with young talented players like Burke and Davis. They need to make their fans forget their former selves as the New Orleans Hornets and the devastating loss of Chris Paul, who coincidentally Burke is most compared to.

The NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars have won both the Dong Xiang leg and the overall “Four Nations” tournament championship with an overall record of 7-2.

The USA defeated China 66-61 in a great game in front of a sellout crowd of 6,500 partisan Chinese fans in Dong Xiang Arena. The Americans led early and held the lead by one at halftime. The Chinese banked in a deep three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the margin to one, one of three banked in shots from distance on the night for the home team.

China, who was led in scoring by 6’5 post player Hengyu Yang with 18 points and point guard Li Wei with 12, had a good second quarter and closed the margin to just one at the half using their low post size advantage when Yang was able to score 14 of her points.

The American team won the third quarter and held the lead in the fourth to secure the victory with stingy defense and great team rebounding. The USA rebounded well despite playing this night without post player Stephanie Sension who suffered a mild concussion in Sunday’s win over Australia.

Kate Thompson

The visitors, who shot 40% on the night, got a good lift from Kate Thompson who hit 4-of-5 three-pointers and scored 14 points for the Americans who had good balance again offensively. Jacqui Kalin scored 11 and Jamie Russell added10 for the Americans. The USA’s guards played good defense, initiated by Meagan Fulps, and really contributed to the rebounding effort against the bigger Chinese team. Kalin and Russell both ended with five boards.

Jacqui Kalin

The Americans also had stellar inside effort from Morgan Johnson, Sam Heck and Sam Ostarello who scored consecutive layups on assists by Adrian Ritchie late in the game to help seal the win. Lauren Oosdyke moved from the perimeter to play post against China with the loss of Sension and played a great game despite giving up as many as six inches at times.

The Americans take the overall title with a 7-2 record while Australia and China tie for second at 5-4, Brazil finishes fourth at 1-8.

The crowd of 5,000 saw a high scoring affair as the Brazilians’ Romona kept them in the game scoring 26 of her own. Vanessa chipped in 17 for the blue and white who were again playing short handed due to ankle injuries to their post players.

Australia beat China last night 58-51. The Aussies jumped out to a 21-9 1st quarter lead and then held on for a 27-26 halftime lead after China stormed back into the game. The second half was another grind it out type of half with the Aussies taking the lead and securing it late for the seven point win. The arena in Dong Xiang was a complete sellout at 6,500. The win moved the Aussies to 4-3 and into a 2nd place tie with China at 4-3. The USA led at 5-2 and Brazil was 1-6.

_____

We just learned today that our game against the Brazilians yesterday was the first ever International basketball competition played in Dong Xiang and also the first in the new arena here in town. That is a nice memory for both the Americans and Brazilians to take home with them.

The NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars came out of the gates charging and played their best game of the tournament with an 85-63 win over the Australian team in front of 5,000 fans this afternoon in Dong Xiang. Jamie Russell continued her stellar play with 15 points while Kate Thompson had 14 and Adrian Ritchie 13 for the USA.

Jaime Russell

The Americans have had some offensive struggles throughout their tour of China but this afternoon they broke out by matching their highest point total (85 vs. Brazil) and having their best shooting game of the event. They were able to shoot 24-of-44 (54%) on two-pointers and 10-of-17 (58%) from behind the three point arc, Thompson was 4-of-9 and Ritchie 3-of-4. It was a welcome change from our shooting struggles of the past several games.

Offensively it was a nice mixture of attacking dribble drives, the post up game, and timely perimeter shooting while on defense the American squad kept the Aussies off balance by changing defenses and held the green & gold to just 39% shooting on the game and out rebounded the Aussies 37 to 23. The Aussies, however, were scoring plenty from the foul line making 19-of-23 from the charity stripe. They were led in scoring by Casey Samuels (6’0 SG) who had a great game scoring 19 points and making 3-of-3 from behind the arc.

Kate Thompson

Both teams won their group with perfect 3-0 records to advance. Joventut won their group with a 75-62 win over Team China while Barcelona advances by beating INSEP Paris 74-55. The teams faced each other in the qualifying stage with Joventut winning 66-58.

Joventut had little trouble with China (1-2). They forced the Chinese into 25 turnovers which resulted in Joventut taking 22 more shots in the game. Joventut maintained a double-digit lead for much of the contest. 6’8 Jose Nogues led the winners with 21 points, shooting 8-of-13 on two-pointers. 6’4 Agusti Sans finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and eight assists while 6’5 Alberto Abalde scored 16 and hit three three-pointers. 6’5 Jinglong Li was the only player in double-figures for Team China with 14 points. Joventut came back from a two-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to score 25 second quarter points to take a ten-point halftime lead.

Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade (2-1) took care of Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (0-3) 73-54. Rytas was the big disappointment of this event. 6’4 Brano Djukanovic led Zvezda with 19 points, hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers. 6’10 Dusan Ristic had a solid game with 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Rytas played their entire roster and had no one scored in double-figures. 6’5 Marko Guduric helped the winners with 14 points and seven rebounds. This game wasn’t close as Zvezda pulled out to a 16-point halftime lead and forced 26 Rytas turnovers in the contest.

FC Barcelona Regal’s 74-55 win over INSEP Paris (1-2) was not close either. They pulled out to an eight-point first quarter lead, led by ten at the half and pulled away from there. 6’6 Marc Garcia led Barcelona with 21 points, hitting three three’s. 6’11Milovan Draskovic added 19 points and 13 rebounds and 6’6 Adria Cantenys contributed 16 points and five rebounds for the winners. Damien Inglis was solid for INSEP with 15 points and nine rebounds. 6’8 Ywen Smock (1996) scored 14 points for INSEP.

Team England (1-2) scored their first tournament win with a 78-61 win over OKK Spars Sarajevo (1-2). 6’3 Cal-Irvine recruit Luke Nelson had his best game of the event with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists although he still only shot 7-of-18. 6’2 Jules Dang Akodo (1996) added 17 points while 6’8 Kavell Bigby scored 14 points on perfect 5-of-5 shooting.
