The Best Conference in College Basketball? The Big East

Forget about RPI's, Sagarin ratings, the (Jay) Bilastrator, the Bald Dome Index (Dicky V).  Let's just go by the eye test and results. The Big East Conference is the best collection of teams in all of college basketball. Earlier in the season I said from top to bottom the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) had much more.  That depth (Miami, Georgia Tech, and Florida State all ranked), and quality teams (at that… Continue reading

WCC Recap: Gonzaga’s Elias Harris is Player of the Week

WEST COAST CONFERENCE (WCC) Conference RPI: has dropped to 14 which means trouble for Portland and St. Mary's.  Both teams were successful in non-conference play but will need to finish 12-2 in conference play and do well in the tournament to even hope for a bid.  They will undoubtedly be "Bubble Teams" come March. Rankings: Gonzaga #10, St. Mary's has an RPI of 34 currently. Player of the Week: Gonzaga's Freshman Forward from… Continue reading

WCC Basketball Recap: Zags Matt Bouldin Earns Player of the Week

WEST COAST CONFERENCE (RPI 12 vs. #5 Strength of Schedule) Rankings: Gonzaga #14 Game Recaps: Gonzaga got a big road win over Portland at the Chiles Center, a place not many teams will win this year.  St. Mary's swept their Bay Area rivals USF and Santa Clara thanks to a great week from Omar Samhan, balanced scoring, solid guard play, and a good (albeit thin) bench.  Pepperdine beat Loyola Marymount 79-75 in Malibu. Basketballin’ Brothers Battle for EuroLeague MVP in Round 1

It may be pro basketball history that a twin needed to outperform the other twin brother to win an honor, but Real Madrid center Darjus Lavrinovic did just that to become the Euroleague's regular season Week 1 MVP. His efficiency rating of 49, the sixth-best total in EL history was incredible, however, Lavrinovic and Madrid suffered a tough 84-81 overtime loss on the road against EL newcomer BC Khimki in Moscow… Continue reading

Shooters Rule NBA Summer League

SHOOTING, we talked a lot about this very topic prior to the NBA Draft in our various blogs and tweets.  Although it is important to have good athletic ability and it certainly is nice to have size, the name of the game is to put the ball in the basket and so far the Summer League Las Vegas has been a showcase for guys who can knock it down. -Steph Curry… Continue reading

International Basketball - Italy

During the recent NBA Draft there was lots of activity involving international players, whether it was Minnesota drafting Ricky Rubio the Spanish Point Guard or the San Antonio Spurs finding a late 2nd Round gem in 6'5 Guard Nando De Colo.  We also had the normal surprises, teams executing the 'draft and stash' practice of choosing a young International who will stay in Europe for a couple years, such as… Continue reading

NBA Mock Draft 2009

This mock draft is a combination of who I think a team should pick and who I hear they will pick.  Of course there are all sorts of rumors out there and as you read the various mock drafts out there you notice that there are some curious similarities.  You probably won't see that here because I have some opinions of my own on some of these young players and Continue reading

NBA Draft Tip - Trade Down

Who should your team pick? Who will be available? Should we take the best player on the board or the position we need? All great questions and every team in the NBA is different in terms of how they go about tackling this issue and then actually executing come draft night.  Chad Ford of ESPN does a great job and has written about this topic in the past so I've included his information Continue reading
