Eugene, OR – The Oregon Ducks faced their toughest home non-conference challenge of the season as Ole Miss of the SEC came to town. The Rebels (6-2) used their height advantage to score repeatedly in the paint while 5’10” whirlwind Stefan Moody scored 22 points as they raced to a 79-73 road win. Freshman Dillon Brooks led Oregon (5-3) with 21 points while Joseph Young added 17 and Elgin Cook added 15.
Ole Miss took a 14-point lead into the second half and maintained their double-digit lead throughout much of the second half. Oregon closed within nine points on a Cook lay-in off a feed from Young with 6:15 left in the game. They got closer near the end of the contest, getting within seven points on two Young free throws with 1:20 remaining, but Ole Miss met the challenge and came up with a nice road win. This was the first game where Oregon’s lack of inside presence seriously hurt them.
The Rebels 6’9″ trio of Sebastian Saiz of Spain (17 points, 5 rebounds), Bahamian Dwight Colbey (10 points, 3 rebounds) and Aaron Jones (10 points, 6 rebounds) proved too much for the Ducks to contend with. 6’8 Jordan Bell (2 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks) wasn’t much of a factor in this game. Oregon needs Bell to played consistently well as he is their only true inside defender at this point.
The Rebels played smart and under control on offense, either working the ball inside or putting up efficient outside shots. They rebounded more effectively in the second half (+6 second half advantage) as their size and strength inside made the difference. Ole Miss was a steady 41.5 percent from the field and 5-of-12 on three-pointers compared to 37.5 percent and 8-of-31 for the Ducks. Young, who came into the game on an 8-of-47 three-point shooting slump, didn’t help matters with a 2-of-10 showing on threes.
Oregon will next to Chicago to face Illinois next Saturday, December 13th. Ole Miss is also off until next Saturday when they will face Western Kentucky at home.
