Milwaukee, WI – Georgetown’s two leading scorers, Markel Starks (24 points) and D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera (19 points), had chances to tie the game versus Marquette in the final 15 seconds. Both shots, within seven feet from the basket, missed and Marquette escaped with a 75-73 win. Marquette is now tied for third in Big East. They have three games left in conference play; two away games and one home game. Without a win against a top 25 team, their next game at #8 Villanova will be the biggest for their resume for the NCAA tournament. This loss for Georgetown means even if they win their last two games they will only finish at . 500 in the Big East.
Starks, a senior, is a 6-2 ,175 pound combo guard. He plays better when he is at point and handling the ball. Starks handles and finishes the ball well in the fast break. His shooting stroke will work in a professional level, but his three point and field goal percentages have dropped from last year due to talent around him and his being asked to be the leader. Starks may garner enough NBA interest for a summer league invitation or D-League assignment.
Smith-Rivera, a sophomore, is a 6-3, 218 pound combo guard. He does not have the true height for a shooting guard, but he plays best when he is off the ball. He shoots the ball best when he steps into his shot without a dribble. He is shooting 40 percent from three this year. Smith-Rivera is strong for a sophomore but needs to improve on court vision, handling and individual defense.
Marquette’s Jake Thomas and Davante Gardner had big games. Thomas had a career high with 22 points and was 6-of-9 on three-pointers giving Marquette the consistent three-point threat they were looking for in the beginning of the season. In the last 6:29, Gardner had 11 of the team’s final 12 points, ending with a game-high 26 points.
