Milwaukee, WI – Marquette scored 40 points in the first half and was limited to only 27 points in the second half but the Golden Eagles were able to beat Seton Hall 67-66. A key series of events happened inside the last two minutes. At 63 -60 Seton Hall’s Sterling Gibbs missed a layup at 1:14 left in the game. Seton Hall decided to foul Marquette and put them on the line, instead of trying to get a stop and then trying to tie the game with a three-point shot. In the last minute Seton Hall did not get the ball with a chance to tie the game. They could only make a three-pointer at the buzzer when the lead was four. The Pirates deserve credit for a solid second half scoring 40 points and making 7-of-14 three’s after falling behind by 14 points in the first half.
Seton Hall’s Gibbs is a sophomore guard who has good vision on the fast break and in pick and roll situations. Another strength is his driving ability that allows him to get in the lane and make plays for others. He needs to improve on finishing in the lane. He went 4-of-12 from the field and 2-of-3 from three. His shooting percentage could be improved by game experience and getting better space for his shot. Gibbs has a set jump shot, which is not going to work against professional league players. He is averaging 15 points, four assists and three rebounds and has next level potential because of his driving ability and vision. However, he needs more game experience and improvement both in shooting in the lane and on his jump shot.
Marquette’s Todd Mayo scored a game high 19 points. His scoring is very important to Marquette’s success. Marquette is the lowest scoring team in the Big East. They need Mayo to be a contest shooter and scorer coming off the bench. Mayo has good offensive skills; he can catch and shoot, has a nice pull up shot and can finish around the rim. His challenge will be to have an aggressive mindset and being consistent every game. He plays solid defense and can guard both guard positions. If Marquette gets back into the conference title race, Mayo will need to shoot and score at a high level to give the Golden Eagles their best opportunity.
