Milwaukee, WI – Xavier was down by ten at the half and trailing as much as 13 in the second half but then narrowed Marquette’s lead to four with 2:09 in the game. Marquette ended the game on a 6-1 run to win 81-72.
Xavier had 14 more turnovers than Marquette which lead to Marquette scoring 27 points off the turnovers. This was a big game in the Big East, Marquette and Xavier are now tied for third in the conference. It will be interesting to see how many teams get in the NCAA tournament from the Big East. Does finishing alone in third get a NCAA tournament bid? Or do Marquette and Xavier have to win or get into the Big East conference tournament final game to get into the NCAA tournament?
Semaj Christon, a 6’3″, 190-pound sophomore combo guard from Xavier plays well in the pick and roll situations either finishing at the rim or finding open teammates. Christon does a lot of things well both offensively and defensively but needs to stay in school to improve on outside shooting, decision making and individual defense. Christon averages 16 points but versus Marquette he had ten points with five turnovers.
Other upper level prospects on Xavier are Justin Martin and Dee Davis. Martin has good length and athleticism which he use well to finish around the rim. Martin went 2-of-6 from the three point line and finished with 20 points. Davis (seven points, seven assists) is a solid point guard who is quick with ball and makes good decisions in the fast break.
Both upper class guards played well for Marquette. Jake Thomas, a senior made a career high six three-pointers. Also, having a career high but in steals was Derrick Wilson (six) who played a well-rounded game with nine points, four assists and no turnovers. For Marquette to continue their three-game winning streak both guards have to show leadership and shoot well to allow their inside scoring to be more effective.
