In Group A, France (4-1), Ukraine (4-1) and Belgium (2-3) advanced while Great Britain (2-3), Germany (2-3) and Israel (2-3) were eliminated.
In Group B, Serbia, Latvia, Lithuania and Bosnia and Herzegovina all finished with 3-2 records. Bosnia and Herzegovina lost the tie-breaker and was eliminated along with Montenegro (2-3) and F.Y.R. of Macedonia (1-4).
In Group C, Spain (4-1), Croatia (4-1) and host Slovenia (3-2) advance while the Czech Republic (2-3), Poland (1-4) and Georgia (1-4) were eliminated.
In Group D, Italy (5-0), the surprising Finland (4-1) and Greece (3-2) make it to the next round. Sweden, Turkey and Russia all finished at 1-4 and were eliminated.
The second round groupings are: Group E, France, Serbia, Lithuania , Ukraine, Latvia and Belgium.
Group F consists of Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Finland, Croatia and Greece. Second round action begins tomorrow.
First round leading scorers were Jeffery Taylor (21.2 ppg, Sweden-Charlotte Bobcats), Mirza Teletovic (21.0 ppg, Bosnia and Herzegovina-Brooklyn Nets), Tony Parker (18.8 ppg, France-San Antonio Spurs), Nihad Djedovic (17.8 ppg, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Bo McCalebb (17.6 ppg, F.Y.R. of Macedonia).
Jan Vesely (Czech Republic-Washington Wizards) was the leading rebounder at 11.2 pg while also scoring 17.0 ppg. Vesely was also the top offensive rebounder at 4.8 per game. Marc Gasol (Spain-Memphis Grizzlies) was the third best rebounder at 8.4 pg behind the 11.0 rebounds per game of Germany’s Tibor Pleiss.
Tomorrow’s games feature Latvia vs. Ukraine, Belgium vs. Serbia and Lithuania vs. France. Group F action starts Thursday with Finland vs. Croatia, Greece vs. Spain and host Slovenia taking on the undefeated Italians.
