The big snowstorm has past us by and we are all set to complete the weekend here at the National Prep School Invitational in Kingston, RI. The second day of play resulted in some exciting games with last second wins as well as some outstanding performances. Here’s the recap:
An impressive Mountain State Academy (West Virginia) team won their second straight game with a 64-44 win over Ocean Academy (NJ). Ronald Ross, a 6′4 junior guard from Indiana, led the winners with 19 points. David Laury, a 6′8 forward from Newark had 13 points and 8 rebounds for Ocean.
NIA Prep (NJ) edged Brewster Academy (NH) 73-72 on a last second three-pointer by Devon Gibson. Jameer Hanner had a monster game for NIA. The 6′9 senior had 20 points and 17 rebounds. Syracuse signee CJ Fair led Brewster with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Heat Academy (VA) outlasted St. Thomas More (CT) 69-64 behind 19 points and 8 rebounds by 6′6 senior Michael Haynes. 6′11 Andre Drummond of Brewster, one of the most highly rated of the sophomore class, was limited to 6 points and 8 rebounds.
Notre Dame Prep (MA) romped over Rise Academy (PA) 90-51 . Notre Dame used their entire roster of 16 players in the rout. 6′7 Ron Giplaye, who has signed with Providence, scored 14 to go along with 8 rebounds for Notre Dame. PJ Santeverne, a 6′0 senior guard led Rise with 20 points. Rise’s roster was reduced as a result of a van accident while the team was in Florida several weeks ago. No one was seriously injured but many of their players are inactive.
In an exciting game Westwind Prep (AZ) defeated St. Andrew’s (RI) 92-83 behind 20 points from 6′4 shooting guard Bo Barnes. Tony Snell, a New Mexico signee, added 18 for Westwind. Syracuse signee, 6′5 junior point guard Michael Carter-Williams was most impressive fot St. Andrew’s with 36 points and 7 rebounds on 6-11 three-point shooting.
Georgetown signee 6′8 Nate Lubick hit a shot from the top of the key just before the final buzzer to give St. Mark’s (MA) an 80-78 win over the Winchendon School (MA). Lubick and 6′8 sophomore Alex Murphy each had 27 points for the winners. Georgia Southern signee 6′8 Eric Ferguson scored 17 for Winchendon.
Humble Christian Life Academy (TX) coasted to a 74-65 win over Worcester Academy behind 25 points from 5′10 guard Javerez Willis, who is headed to Texas Tech. Willis showed excellent range in shooting 7-15 on three-pointers. Bill Baron, a Rhode Island signee, scored 30 points for Worcester.
In the day’s final contest, Bridgton Academy (ME) came from behind and defeated the Canarias Basketball Academy (Canary Islands) 75-58 as 6′1 guard Alexander Harris scored 28 on 6-11 three-point shooting. Tom Pereiras, a 6′2 guard from England, scored 23 for Canarias.
